Grigory Kaidanov: An Accomplished Chess Grandmaster
Early Life and Career in the Soviet UnionGrigory Kaidanov was born on October 11, 1959, in Berdichev, Ukraine. His family moved to Kaliningrad the following year, where he began his chess journey at the age of six, learning from his father. By age eight, he had won the Russian Under-14 Championship, marking his early success.
Kaidanov's talent continued to shine in his teenage years. He won the Moscow Oblast Championship four times (1977-1982) and the DSO "Lokomotiv" Championship twice (1980, 1983). In 1984 and 1985, he participated in the All-Union Young Masters Tournaments, achieving a notable fourth-fifth place finish in 1984.
International Success and Grandmaster Title
Kaidanov's international debut was equally impressive. In 1986 and 1987, he placed fourth-sixth and first in Moscow tournaments. He also finished eighth-ninth in Tbilisi (1986) and second-fourth in Balatonberény (1987). These achievements earned him the prestigious Grandmaster title in 1988.
Move to the United States
In 1991, Kaidanov immigrated to the United States with his wife, Valeria. He settled in Lexington, Kentucky, where he pursued a career as a chess coach. He became a valued mentor and teacher, passing on his knowledge and skills to aspiring young players.
Personal Life
Kaidanov and Valeria have three children: Anastasia (born April 18, 1983), Boris (born November 16, 1986), and Sonia (born December 1, 1994). He remains an active figure in the chess community, both in the United States and internationally.
