Early Life and EducationGrigory Aivazovich Kapantsyan was born in Armenia and graduated from Saint Petersburg University in 1913.
Academic Career
Following his graduation, Kapantsyan worked as a teacher in various seminaries and gymnasiums in Armenia. In 1920, he became a founding professor at Yerevan State University, where he led the Department of General Linguistics from 1927 to 1957. He earned the title of Professor in 1930 and became an Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR in 1943.
Research Interests
Kapantsyan's academic pursuits focused on comparative historical linguistics, particularly the interactions between Armenian and other Near Eastern languages. His seminal work, "Hayasa - The Cradle of Armenians," published in 1947, became the foundation of established theories regarding Armenian ethnogenesis.
Controversies and Resistance
Kapantsyan's opposition to Nikolai Marr's New Doctrine on Language drew sharp criticism. During the final resurgence of Marr's influence in 1949, Kapantsyan was dismissed from his position. Undeterred, he publicly challenged Marr's theories in the newspaper "Pravda" during the 1950 debate.
Legacy
Kapantsyan's contributions to Armenian linguistics continue to be highly regarded. His work on the historical development of Armenian language and its connections to other languages expanded our understanding of its origins and evolution.
