Early Life and Education
Grigol Vakhtangovich Kiladzewas born on October 12 (25), 1902, in Batumi, Georgia, into a musical family. His passion for music emerged at an early age, and he began his formal training in 1924 at the Tbilisi Conservatory under Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov.
In 1927, Kiladze transferred to the Leningrad Conservatory, where he studied composition with Viktor Shcherbachev. From 1931, he continued his studies at the Tbilisi Conservatory with Sergey Barkhudaryan.
Career as a Conductor and Director
After graduating in 1931, Kiladze returned to the Tbilisi Conservatory as a conductor. In 1952, he became its chief conductor, and from 1954 to 1962, he served as the conductor and artistic director of the Opera Studio.
From 1941 to 1945, Kiladze held the position of artistic director, conductor, and director of the Tbilisi State Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Z. Paliashvili. He played a significant role in revitalizing the theatre and promoting Georgian music.
Contributions to Georgian Music
Kiladze was a pioneer in the development of the symphony genre in Georgia. His works drew inspiration from Georgian folk music and showcased the richness of the country's musical heritage. In 1937, he became the chairman of the Composers' Union of Georgia.
Legacy
Grigol Kiladze's legacy as a composer, conductor, and director continues to inspire Georgian musicians. He passed away on April 3, 1962, in Tbilisi, leaving behind a lasting impact on the country's musical scene. His son, Lev Kiladze, also became a notable conductor.
