Grigory Kovalev: A Soviet Cavalry Commander
Early Life and Military CareerGrigory Andreevich Kovalev was born on December 19, 1899, in the village of Soleny, Rostov Oblast, Russia. In February 1918, he joined the Red Army and fought in Semyon Budyonny's detachment during the Russian Civil War.
Interwar Service
After the war, Kovalev held various positions in the cavalry. He attended military courses and served as a squadron commander in the 20th Cavalry Regiment. From 1931 to 1936, he studied at the Frunze Military Academy.
Pre-World War II
Kovalev was assigned to the Reconnaissance Directorate of the Red Army and served as an instructor in the Mongolian People's Republic. In October 1940, he became assistant commander of the 32nd Cavalry Division.
World War II
At the outbreak of World War II, Kovalev commanded the 3rd Airborne Brigade on the Southwestern Front. In November 1941, he was appointed commander of the 32nd Cavalry Division, which later became part of the 2nd Cavalry Corps.
Command of the 2nd Cavalry Corps
As corps commander from March 10, 1942, Kovalev participated in the Battle of Kharkov. During the fighting, his corps was surrounded, and he went missing on May 24, 1942.
Awards and Recognition
Kovalev was a distinguished cavalry commander known for his bravery and leadership. He was awarded two Orders of the Red Banner (1923, 1942) and the Jubilee Medal "XX Years of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army."
