Early Life and Education
Qudrat Ismayilzade was born on October 24, 1934, in Baku, Azerbaijan. He completed his undergraduate studies in history from Azerbaijan State University in 1957. In 1960, he defended his candidate's dissertation on "The Ancient Culture of Western Azerbaijan" at Tbilisi State University under the supervision of Academician O. M. Japaridze.
Academic Career
In 1983, Ismayilzade obtained his doctoral degree in archeology from Tbilisi, specializing in the "Early Bronze Age Culture of Azerbaijan." He held a professorship at Baku State University, where he chaired the Department of Archeology and Ethnography from 2004 until his retirement.
Archaeological Expeditions
Ismayilzade played a significant role in numerous archaeological expeditions. Between 1964 and 1988, he led expeditions to study early agricultural culture in Karabakh. He also participated in joint expeditions with the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences under the renowned archaeologist A. A. Iessen.
International Collaborations
Ismayilzade actively engaged in international archaeological projects, delivering lectures on Azerbaijan's ancient material culture in West Germany (1969-1990). He participated in excavations at Troy, Bogazköy, Altıntepe, and other sites.
Publications and Editorial Work
Ismayilzade authored over 150 scientific publications and edited numerous scholarly monographs. He was the editor-in-chief of the journal "Archaeology of Azerbaijan" and a member of the international editorial board of "Miras" (Ashgabat).
Research Focus
Ismayilzade focused his research on the cultural heritage of the Bronze Age in Azerbaijan, particularly its spiritual values. His excavations in Nakhichevan revealedBronze Age cultural layers, material culture, and the development of early agriculture.
Honors and Recognition
Qudrat Ismayilzade was a distinguished scholar who received the Order of "Glory" in 2019. He was an honorary doctor of Baku State University and served as the chairman of the Azerbaijan Bureau of the Russian Archaeological Society.
Legacy
Ismayilzade passed away on April 1, 2024, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Azerbaijani archaeology. His contributions to the study of early civilization and cultural heritage continue to inspire future generations of researchers.
