Early Life and InfluencesGuillermo del Toro, a celebrated Mexican filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, and novelist, was born on October 9, 1964, in Guadalajara, Mexico. Raised by a devout Catholic grandmother, he developed a fascination with the paranormal and the macabre from a young age. Films by James Whale, George Romero, and Alfred Hitchcock inspired his imagination, leaving a profound impact on his cinematic vision.
Filmmaking Career
After completing his education at the University of Guadalajara and studying makeup and special effects under Dick Smith, del Toro worked as a makeup artist and founded his special effects studio, Necrotopia. In 1993, he directed his debut feature film, "Cronos," which explored the themes of immortality and the consequences of darkness.
Moving to Hollywood in 1997, del Toro directed the horror film "Mimic," gaining experience in the American studio system. Returning to Mexico, he established his own production company, Tequila Gang, and created the critically acclaimed "The Devil's Backbone" (2001).
In 2004, he helmed the comic book adaptation "Hellboy," starring Ron Perlman as the eponymous supernatural hero. Del Toro married Lorenza Newton in 1986, with whom he had two children. Despite widespread speculation, he is not related to actor Benicio del Toro. In 2017, he announced his separation from Newton, and their divorce was finalized in 2018.

In 2017, del Toro directed "The Shape of Water," a critically acclaimed romantic fantasy that won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and secured him the Academy Award for Best Director.
