Guillermo Gorostiza Paredes: A Basque Legend

Early Life and Football Career

Guillermo Gorostiza Paredes was born in Santurtzi, Spain on February 15, 1909. Despite coming from a humble background, his love for football emerged at a young age. Gorostiza's first footballing experiences came with local Basque clubs Chavarri and Sugasarte. In 1928, he joined Arenas Club but soon realized that financial instability prompted him to seek opportunities abroad.

Sojourn to Argentina and Return

Driven by the need for financial stability, Gorostiza embarked on a journey to Buenos Aires, Argentina. However, he struggled to adapt to life there and quickly returned to Spain. Subsequently, he joined Racing Ferrol, where he performed his military service.

Gorostiza's remarkable performance against Espanyol, where he scored against the legendary Ricardo Zamora, caught the attention of top Spanish clubs, including Real Madrid, Arenas Club, and Athletic Bilbao. Ultimately, it was his close friend, Ramon Lafuente, who persuaded him to join Athletic.

The Legendary Blue-and-Whites (1929-1940)

In 1929, Gorostiza signed for Athletic Bilbao, embarking on an illustrious 11-year career. As a striker, he became the club's all-time top scorer, leading them to four La Liga titles and four Copa del Rey trophies. Gorostiza also earned international recognition, representing Spain 19 times and scoring two goals.

During the Spanish Civil War, Gorostiza played for Escaudi, which toured Europe and the Soviet Union. In Paris, he accepted an invitation from General Franco's emissaries to return to Spain.

Post-Athletic Career (1940-1951)

In the 1939-1940 season, Gorostiza transferred to Valencia for a fee of 50,000 pesetas. With Valencia, he won two more La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey. Later, he played for Baracaldo, Logroñés, and Juventud, where he retired in 1951 at the age of 42.

Coaching and Legacy

Following his retirement, Gorostiza attempted a coaching career but faced limited success. On August 23, 1966, Gorostiza passed away. A memorial match between Valencia and Athletic Bilbao was held at Mestalla Stadium in his honor, where both teams paid tribute to the legendary player.
