Matias Almeyda: Argentine Football Legend
Early CareerMatias Almeyda, born in Argentina, began his football career in the youth system of River Plate, where he made his professional debut in 1991. He quickly established himself as a talented midfielder, winning three Argentine Primera División titles with the club (1991, 1993, and 1994).
Move to Italy and Rise to Stardom
In 1996, Almeyda joined Lazio in Italy's Serie A. He became a fan favorite after scoring a spectacular goal from 30 meters out against Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. His impressive performances earned him the Serie A Player of the Year award for the 1997/98 season.
Almeyda went on to play for several other Italian clubs, including Internazionale, Parma, and Brescia. At Parma, he helped the team win the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1998/99 and the Super Cup in 1999.
International Career
Almeyda made his debut for the Argentine national team in 1996. He was part of the squad that competed in the 1996 Olympics and the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups.
Return to Argentina and Coaching Career
In 2004, Almeyda returned to Argentina to play for his former club, River Plate. He announced his retirement as a player in 2007 but made a brief comeback in 2009.
In 2011, Almeyda began his coaching career as the manager of River Plate. He led the team to win the Copa Libertadores in 2015, making him one of the most successful Argentine coaches of his generation.
