Born in Reykjavík in 1914, Gunnar Thoroddsen embarked on his political career at an early age. In 1934, he became the youngest member of Iceland's parliament, the Althing, as a representative of the Independence Party.
Mayor of Reykjavík and Minister of Finance
From 1947 to 1959, Thoroddsen served as the mayor of Reykjavík. In 1959, he was appointed Minister of Finance, a position he held until 1965. During his tenure, he oversaw Iceland's economic growth and development.
Ambassador to Denmark and Presidential Bid
In 1965, Thoroddsen was appointed Iceland's ambassador to Denmark. He served in this role until 1969, when he ran for president against Kristján Eldjárn. However, he was unsuccessful in his bid for the presidency.
Minister of Industry and Prime Minister
From 1974 to 1978, Thoroddsen held the position of Minister of Industry and Social Welfare under Prime Minister Geir Hallgrímsson. In 1980, he became the leader of the Independence Party and formed a coalition government with the Progressive Party and the People's Alliance.
As Prime Minister, Thoroddsen was the oldest person to hold the office in Iceland's history. He led the country through a period of economic and social challenges.
