Hussein Arablinsky: Pioneer of Azerbaijani Theatre and Film
Early Life and EducationBorn in 1881 in Baku to an impoverished family, Hussein Arablinsky lost his father at a young age. Despite financial hardships, his mother enrolled him in a school-mollakhana (traditional Islamic religious school). Due to a lack of funds, he was forced to halt his studies after a few years.
Enter Habib-bek Mahmudbekov, a teacher at the "Third Russian-Tatar School." Recognizing the importance of education for underprivileged children, he provided opportunities for students from poor backgrounds. Arablinsky thus enrolled in the school, where he mastered Russian and discovered his passion for theater.
Theatrical Beginnings
Arablinsky's first theatrical experiences came under the guidance of Habib-bek Mahmudbekov, who collaborated with Jahangir Zeynalov to stage works by Mirza Fatali Akhundov. Arablinsky played a small role in one such production.
Professional Career
In 1905, at the age of 24, Arablinsky joined the Muslim Actors' Society and made his breakthrough performance as Fakhraddin in Najaf-bek Vezirov's "Tragedy of Fakhraddin" during a tour in Lankaran. Throughout his career, he played iconic roles such as Shah in "Agha Muhammad Shah Qajar," Khlestakov in "The Inspector General," and Hamlet in "Hamlet."
Cinema and the Birth of Azerbaijani Film
Arablinsky's love for the arts extended to film. In 1916, he starred in Boris Svetlov's "In the Kingdom of Oil and Millions," becoming the first Azerbaijani film actor.
Personal Life and Tragedy
During a tour in Derbent in 1906, Arablinsky fell in love with a young woman named Arapli. He adopted the stage name "Arablinsky" in her honor. His acting career and cross-dressing in female roles, however, met with disapproval from his family. In 1919, Hussein Arablinsky was tragically murdered by his cousin, Abdulhalig.
Legacy
Hussein Arablinsky is revered as a pioneer of Azerbaijani theatre and film. He directed the first Azerbaijani opera, "Leyli and Majnun," and played a crucial role in establishing professional theatre in the country. His contributions have left an enduring mark on the cultural landscape of Azerbaijan.
