Count Johan David af Lantingshausen
Early Life and CareerBorn on March 22, 1777, to Admiral Johan Gustaf Lantingshausen, Johan David af Lantingshausen embarked on his diplomatic career at the age of 15 as a clerk for the Royal Chancery. By 19, he had risen to the rank of Second Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
Rise to Prominence
In 1801, Lantingshausen was appointed Cabinet Secretary, and in 1804, he became Undersecretary of State. At the tender age of 28, he joined the State Committee of Public Affairs, overseeing most government and diplomatic correspondence from 1800 to 1806. He frequently accompanied King Gustav IV Adolf on trips abroad.
Diplomatic Missions
A rift developed between Lantingshausen and the king in 1806, leading to his recall from Germany to Sweden. After the 1809 coup d'état, he was appointed State Councillor and subsequently dispatched to Paris for peace negotiations, which he successfully concluded in January 1810. He remained in France as Sweden's Minister Plenipotentiary at the French court for some time.
Return and Later Years
Upon his return to Sweden, Lantingshausen briefly held no official position. However, in 1821, he was elevated to the rank of count and bestowed with the Order of the Seraphim a year later. In 1831, he rejoined the State Council.
Legacy
Johan David af Lantingshausen died unmarried in Stockholm on May 24, 1837. He left behind memoirs that chronicled his life and experiences up to 1811.
