His father, Crown Prince Gustav Adolph, tragically died in an airplane crash in Copenhagen a year after Gustav Carl's birth. As a result, he was raised by his mother, Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and his four older sisters. Growing up in the company of his sisters, Gustav Carl developed a deep love for his family and his country.

In his youth, Gustav Carl dreamt of becoming a chauffeur or a train conductor. However, it was clear that such luxuries were not meant for him.
