Early Life and Education
Guy Kawasaki was born on August 30, 1954, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Despite his family's modest means, his parents instilled in him a sense of abundance. After graduating from Iolani School in 1972, he pursued a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Stanford University (1976). Though initially enrolled in law school at the University of California, Davis, Kawasaki dropped out after a week, finding it incompatible with his interests.
Business Odyssey
Returning to the University of California, Los Angeles, Kawasaki earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1978. His early work experience included tallying diamonds at Nova Stylings and developing educational software at EduWare Services. A former roommate offered him a position at Apple in 1983, where he witnessed the transformative power of the Macintosh computer.
Evangelizing the Macintosh
For four years, Kawasaki championed the Macintosh, pioneering an evangelistic approach to marketing. His efforts played a pivotal role in shaking IBM's dominance in the industry. During his tenure at Apple, he met his future wife, Beth.
Entrepreneurial Ventures
After leaving Apple in 1987, Kawasaki established ACIUS, a company specializing in Macintosh databases, and led it for two years. In 1989, he founded Fog City Software, which produced products such as Emailer and LetterRip. He briefly returned to Apple in 1995 before transitioning to venture capitalism, currently serving as Managing Director of Garage Technology Ventures.
