Biography of Michael Dell
Michael Dell, the founder and CEO of Dell Inc., started his company in modest conditions, providing homemade modifications to IBM PC. In 2006, he ranked 12th on the list of the world's wealthiest individuals.
Early Life
Michael Dell grew up in a relatively affluent family. He attended school in Houston, Texas, but his prospects were not seen as promising. One of his teachers even remarked that Michael Dell would "most likely not achieve anything in his life." However, at the age of twelve, Michael began to show signs of intelligence. During his vacations, he worked at the post office, convincing residents to subscribe to the newspaper and earning a percentage for every new subscriber. He noticed that it was easier to persuade newcomers to start a subscription. Michael began paying his friends two dollars a day to find new residents for him. This way, the twelve-year-old Michael Dell earned $2000.
Entrepreneurial Journey
Michael Dell first encountered an Apple II computer at the age of fifteen. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin with the intention of becoming a doctor. During his studies, he founded the PC's Limited company, which sold computers. The company quickly began generating significant profits, leading Dell to drop out of university at the age of nineteen to devote all his time to the business. In 1987, PC's Limited was renamed Dell Computer Corporation. Despite numerous challenges, including laptop fire hazards in 1993 and losing a significant market share to Gateway in the mid-1990s, the company not only survived but also became the most profitable PC manufacturer in the world. In 2004, Dell's sales exceeded $49 billion, with a profit of around $3 billion. In 2003, the company changed its name to Dell, Inc., reflecting its expanded product range. On March 4, 2004, Michael Dell stepped down as CEO but remained chairman of the board, while Kevin Rollins took his place.
