Biography of Guy Sebastian

Guy Theodore Sebastian, an Australian singer and composer, was born on October 26, 1981, in Klang, Malaysia. He is of Sri Lankan, English, and Portuguese descent, with his father Ivan being of Sri Lankan origin and his mother Nellie having roots in England and Portugal. The family moved to Melbourne in 1988, and later settled in Adelaide, South Australia, where Ivan worked as a geologist.

As a child, Sebastian took violin lessons and played guitar, drums, and piano. He attended the Paradise Community Church, one of the largest churches in Australia, where he sang in the choir in front of over 15,000 parishioners. In May 2003, he auditioned for the talent show "Australian Idol" and impressed the judges with his rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Ribbon in the Sky". Throughout the competition, Sebastian gained a large fan base and received praise from the judges, who often commented on his distinctive afro hairstyle. On November 19, Guy was announced as the winner of the show.

Immediately after his victory, Sebastian began recording his debut album to release it before Christmas. The album, which included three original songs written by Sebastian, broke the sales record of the studio 'ARIA', selling 163,000 copies in its first week and becoming certified seven times platinum. To this day, it remains the best-selling album of any "Australian Idol" contestant. In early 2004, Sebastian and other finalists embarked on a concert tour in Australia, where his album went double platinum in New Zealand, and his debut single reached number one on the charts.

In April 2004, Sebastian embarked on a promotional tour in Malaysia before heading to Europe and the United States to record his second album, "Beautiful Life". The album had a stronger R&B influence and featured a duet with American R&B singer Maya. The first single, "Out with My Baby", reached the top of the charts, and the album sold 100,000 copies. Sebastian received numerous accolades and awards for his second album.

Following the success of his second album, Sebastian spent some time overseas working on his third album. He also traveled to Africa to film a documentary for the Christian organization "World Vision Australia," for which he had become an ambassador. Sebastian's third album, "Closer to the Sun," featured songs written in 2005 and showcased a blend of genres, with a focus on pop-rock. The album's lead single, "Taller, Stronger, Better," debuted at number three and achieved gold status. The album itself reached number four and went platinum.

In 2007, Sebastian performed concerts in the eastern states and south of Australia. He also performed three shows with the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House and Hamer Hall in Melbourne. In August 2007, Sebastian recorded a tribute album with musicians Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Steve Potts, and Lester Snell at Ardent Studios in Memphis. The album, titled "The Memphis Album," debuted at number three on the charts and became the seventh best-selling album in Australia.

In early 2008, Sebastian embarked on a concert tour with the instrumental soul group "The M.G.'s," starting with two shows at the Bridge Hotel in Sydney. The tour consisted of 16 concerts across various cities in Australia. In early 2009, Sebastian returned to the United States to continue working on his new album, which would consist of songs from "The Memphis Album" and new original tracks. He signed a contract with the label "Victor/Sony" and announced that the album, titled "Like It Like That," would be released in October 2009.

In late 2007, after eight years of courtship, Guy Sebastian became engaged to his girlfriend Julie Egan. They married in May 2008 in a ceremony held on the Manly coastline in Sydney.
