Guy Verhofstadt, born on April 11, 1953, is a prominent Belgian politician who served as Prime Minister of Belgium from July 1999 to 2007. His political journey began early on.
Early Political Career
In 1972, Verhofstadt became president of the Flemish Liberal Student Union. By the age of 29, he had risen to the position of chairman of the Flemish Liberal Party (PVV). In 1985, he became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Budget under Wilfried Martens' government. Due to his youthful age and economic views, he earned the nickname "Baby Thatcher" during this period.
First Attempt at Premiership
In 1991, Verhofstadt had the opportunity to form a government for the first time but failed, leading to a temporary withdrawal from politics. However, he returned in 1997 as leader of the Flemish Liberals and Democrats (VLD), adopting a more centrist stance.
Prime Minister of Belgium
In 1999, after winning the elections in Flanders and forming a coalition with Flemish and Walloon socialists and greens, Verhofstadt became Prime Minister. Following the 2003 parliamentary elections, he formed a new government without the participation of the greens.
Second Term and Legacy
Verhofstadt's second term as Prime Minister was marked by frequent crises. The 2007 elections presented a significant challenge to his leadership. His legacy includes leading Belgium's transition to the euro currency, promoting economic liberalism, and playing a key role in reforming the European Union.
