Early Life and Education
Gylman Ilkin was born on April 28, 1914, in the Baku settlement of Mardakan. After completing his education at a pedagogical technical school and the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute, Ilkin embarked on his career as a teacher and director in Ahmedovbin, a rural school in the Khachmaz district.
Writing Career
Ilkin's literary journey began with the short story "Wounded City." Throughout his career, he published numerous works, including "Paths of Life," "Mountain Neighborhood," "Madame Gedri," "North Wind," "Sea Gate," "Inscribed Stone," and "Baku and the People of Baku."
Wartime and Literary Accomplishments
During the Great Patriotic War, Ilkin served as a war correspondent on the fronts of the Southern and Northern Caucasus. He also worked in Iran, contributing to the publication of the Teheran-based newspaper "Veten yolunda."
Following the war, Ilkin held several prestigious roles, including scientific secretary of the Jubilee Committee for the 800th anniversary of Nizami, senior lecturer at Azerbaijan State University, and editor-in-chief and director of "Azerneshr." He was also the editor-in-chief of the magazine "Azerbaijan."
Film and Stage Adaptations
Ilkin's literary prowess extended beyond the written word. His novel "A City Uprising" was adapted into the feature film "Unconquered Battalion." Several of his plays, such as "Surgeons," "The Sound of the Forest," and "No Way Back," became the basis for television productions of the same name.
