Early Life and Education

Hichilema was born in the Monze district of present-day Zambia. He pursued an undergraduate degree in Economics and Business Administration at the University of Zambia, graduating in 1986. Subsequently, he obtained an MBA in Finance and Business Strategy from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Entrepreneurial Career

Prior to entering politics, Hichilema held positions as Chief Executive Officer of Coopers and Lybrand Zambia (1994-1998) and Grant Thornton Zambia (1998-2006). His entrepreneurial experience contributed to his business acumen and leadership skills.

Political Journey

Hichilema became involved in Zambian politics as a member of the United Party for National Development (UPND). In 2006, following the passing of Anderson Mazoka, he was elected as the party's president. Hichilema also led the United Democratic Alliance, a coalition of three opposition parties.

2006-2016 Elections

Hichilema's first presidential run came in the 2006 elections, where he garnered 25% of the vote. He contested in subsequent elections in 2008 and 2011, securing third place both times. In 2015 and 2016, he narrowly lost to incumbent Edgar Lungu, prompting him to question the legitimacy of the electoral processes.

Treason Charge and Imprisonment

In April 2017, Hichilema was arrested and charged with treason for allegedly attempting to overthrow the government. He spent four months in prison before being released on a nolle prosequi.

2021 Election and Presidency

Despite previous electoral setbacks, Hichilema remained determined and contested the 2021 elections as the UPND candidate. This time, he emerged victorious and was sworn in as President on August 24, 2021.

Economic Policies

Since taking office, Hichilema has implemented economic reforms aimed at strengthening the Zambian currency. His policies have resulted in a significant increase in the value of the Kwacha against the US dollar. Additionally, Zambia has experienced an increase in demand for its US dollar-denominated Eurobonds.
