Harold Linden: Broadway Star and Beloved Television Actor
American actor Harold Linden showcased his versatility in theater, film, and television. He is best known for his iconic role in the sitcom "Barney Miller" (1975–1982).
Early Life and Education
Born in New York City to Francis (née Rosen) and Charles Lipschitz, Linden's father worked as a cobbler. He graduated from the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan and later studied music at Queens College.
Early Career in Music and Theater
Linden's career began as a clarinetist and singer in a dance band. He and his brother Bernie, a violinist, adopted the stage фамилия Linden after a water tower bearing the name. In 1957, Linden made his Broadway debut in "Bells Are Ringing" alongside Judy Holliday.
Success on Broadway
His breakthrough came in 1962 with his portrayal of Billy Crocker in Cole Porter's musical "Anything Goes." Nine years later, Linden won a Tony Award for his starring role in Jerry Bock's musical "The Rothschilds."
"Barney Miller" and Television Fame
From 1975 to 1982, Linden played the title role in the comedy series "Barney Miller." As the police captain, he received seven Emmy nominations and four Golden Globe nominations, but never won.
Later Career
Linden appeared in numerous television shows, including "The Golden Girls," "The Bold and the Beautiful," "Gilmore Girls," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," "Will & Grace," "The King of Queens," "The Nanny," and "Hot in Cleveland." He also starred in the 1997 film "Open Water."
Philanthropy and Personal Life
Linden served as a national spokesperson for the Jewish National Fund. He was married to actress and dancer Frances Martin for 52 years until her passing in 2010. They had four children. In 2011, Linden released his first music album, "It's Never Too Late."
