Biography of Hammasa Kohistani
Early Life and BackgroundHammasa Kohistani, a British model and beauty pageant contestant, was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, which was then part of the USSR. Her parents, who had fled from Afghanistan due to the Russo-Afghan war, later returned to Kabul, Afghanistan. Unfortunately, the rise of the Taliban in 1996 forced Kohistani and her family to seek refuge in the United Kingdom. Her father, Kushal, opened a fast-food restaurant there. Kohistani is multilingual, fluent in six languages including English, Russian, and Persian.
Beauty Pageant Success and Controversy
Kohistani made history by becoming the first Muslim woman to be crowned "Miss England" at the age of 18. She competed against 40 other participants and was awarded the title of "Beauty Queen." Her participation in beauty pageants, along with other Muslim women like Sarah Mendly, who competed for the title of "Miss Nottingham," sparked controversy due to the traditional swimsuit rounds that required minimal clothing.
Miss World Competition and Modeling Career
As "Miss England," Kohistani represented her country in the "Miss World" competition held in China. Despite being a fan favorite and considered one of the frontrunners, she did not advance beyond the semi-finals. In May 2006, Kohistani was featured in a photoshoot for Teen Vogue magazine. She pursued her education in London, attending Hounslow School and later Uxbridge College.
Activism and Controversy
Kohistani voiced her protest against a statement made by Tony Blair, then the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, urging Muslims to moderate their extremist tendencies. She believed that government officials were deliberately inciting hatred towards Muslims. One of Kohistani's photographs, stored in the Getty Images catalog, was used as the basis for a character in the popular video game series "Mass Effect" (Tali'Zorah Vas Normandy). This usage caused some dissatisfaction among Kohistani's fans, but the issue did not escalate into a serious controversy.
