Biography of Hank Ballard

Hank Ballard, born John Henry Kendricks on November 18, 1936, was a talented musician and R&B performer. He grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where he discovered his passion for music and dreamed of a musical career while singing in a church choir. As he got older, Hank started working in radio and collaborated with various celebrities. In 1951, he formed a group called The Royals, playing in the popular doo-wop style of the 1950s.

After some time, the group changed its name to The Midnighters, with members including Henry Booth, Charles Sutton, Sonny Woods, and Alonzo Tucker. In 1953, they recorded an intriguing single called "Get It," which was deemed too risqué for most radio stations. They followed up with another provocative song, "Sexy Ways," further solidifying their reputation as a daring group. Despite the controversy, the Midnighters achieved considerable popularity, with their songs hitting the charts and gaining fans.

However, by the late 1950s and early 1960s, Hank Ballard and his colleagues' music became less in demand. Although a few new releases rekindled some interest, the group eventually disbanded in 1965. Hank Ballard made several unsuccessful attempts to reunite the band afterward.

In 1990, Hank Ballard was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recognizing his talent and contribution to music. Unfortunately, he passed away on March 2, 2003, in Los Angeles at the age of seventy-six. Hank had been battling throat cancer for some time and ultimately succumbed to the illness.

Today, the music of the talented performer Hank Ballard continues to captivate R&B fans and fans of Hank Ballard and The Midnighters.
