Hannah Hoes Van Buren was the wife of the eighth President of the United States, Martin Van Buren. She was born into the Hoes family on March 8, 1783, in Kinderhook, New York. Hannah, at the age of 23, married Martin, who was 24, on February 21, 1807, in her sister's house in Catskill, New York. The couple had known each other since childhood and grew up in Dutch families.

Teaching Career and Family

Hannah Hoes had a humble upbringing and taught at a local school in Kinderhook under Master Vrouw Lange. Like Martin, she grew up in a Dutch family and never had an accent. Hannah was known for her modesty, and Martin affectionately called his blue-eyed bride "Yannette," which translates from Dutch to Johanna.
