Hannah Moore: Paralympic Champion and Amputee
Early Life and RSDHannah Moore's journey began at age 15 when a routine procedure to remove an ingrown toenail led to the development of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), a rare and debilitating condition characterized by severe pain, swelling, and discoloration. Despite numerous surgeries and skin grafts, the pain persisted, leaving Moore wheelchair-bound and battling life-threatening sepsis.
Decision to Amputate
After four years of relentless pain, Moore made the life-altering decision to amputate her right leg. Despite the NHS's refusal to fund the procedure, she raised £5,000 privately and underwent the amputation in July 2016.
Transformation into Champion Triathlete
Following the amputation, Moore shed 25kg and began weight training to strengthen her body. Within three months, she was training again and, by August 2017, had won the British paratriathlon championship. She now aims to compete in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics and claim gold.
Custom-Made Prosthetic Leg
As a cyclist, Moore relies on a specially designed, intelligent prosthetic leg created by Dorset Orthopaedic. The carbon fiber module directly attaches to the bike pedal, reducing energy loss and providing stability.
Running the Track
After finishing the cycling portion of the triathlon, Moore switches to a running blade, known as a Cheetah prosthetic, invented by Van Phillips.
Paralympic Dreams
Moore believes her advanced prosthetics will give her a competitive edge in Tokyo. "The decision to amputate my leg was the best I ever made," she says. "Without it, I wouldn't have been able to achieve what I have. I'm a British champion and now I have my sights set on Tokyo."
Courage and Determination
Despite the challenges she has faced, Moore remains optimistic and determined. "The hardest time for me was before the amputation," she says. "I was having surgery in London nearly every week, and the pain was just unbearable."
Moore's story is an inspiring testament to the power of overcoming adversity and living a full life despite challenges. She continues to train and strive for greatness, demonstrating that anything is possible with courage and determination.
