Biography of Hanoi Hannah

Early Life

Chin Thi Ngo, better known as Hanoi Hannah, was born in Hanoi in 1931. She grew up in a wealthy and prominent family, with her father being a prominent industrialist who owned multiple factories. Chin Thi Ngo received a good education, as her father believed that for her to succeed in life, she needed to be educated and intelligent.

Passion for English Language

Chin Thi Ngo had a particular interest in the English language. She loved watching movies, especially the romantic epic "Gone with the Wind." Despite not knowing English, she would watch American films without subtitles. Perhaps it was her passion for movies that motivated her to study foreign languages. In 1956, Chin Thi Ngo worked as a newsreader on Vietnam's National Radio Station, where she delivered news in English.

Voice of Hanoi Hannah

During the Vietnam War in the 1960s, Chin Thi Ngo began hosting propaganda broadcasts for American soldiers. It was during this time that she acquired her alias, Hanoi Hannah. Initially, several Vietnamese women performed under this name, but it eventually became exclusively associated with Chin Thi Ngo. Hanoi Hannah informed American soldiers about casualties, prisoners of war, and wounded soldiers. She spoke about the presence of American troops in Vietnam as a mistake and injustice, urging soldiers to lay down their weapons and return home.

"Lady Dragon" and Post-War Life

In addition to Hanoi Hannah, she also earned the nickname "Lady Dragon." Hanoi Hannah's broadcasts were so professionally executed that it seemed like she could read the minds of American soldiers, leading them to attempt desertion. After the war, Chin Thi Ngo returned to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon). She got married and began living a normal life. She was offered several opportunities to host programs on HCMC Channel, but Chin Thi Ngo declined.

Legacy and Retirement

Today, she devotes most of her time to her family and husband. She has retired her alias, Hanoi Hannah. However, her voice will forever remain in the memory of many American soldiers. Despite being on the opposite side of the conflict, Hanoi Hannah always spoke the truth. Her speeches consistently advocated against violence and killings, promoting love and wisdom.
