Early Life and Education
Hans Gal was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1890. At an early age, he began studying music, attending the Vienna Conservatory where he was a pupil of Eusebius Mandyczewski. Gal later furthered his studies in musicology at the University of Vienna.
Teaching Career
Gal began his teaching career in 1919, instructing harmony and counterpoint at the New Vienna Conservatory. In 1929, he assumed the role of Director of the Mainz Conservatory in Germany. However, with the rise of the Nazi party in 1933, Gal was вынужден to return to Vienna.
Emigration and Professorship
After the annexation of Austria, Gal left for Great Britain in 1938. With the outbreak of World War II, he was briefly interned. Following his release, Gal became a professor at the Edinburgh Conservatory from 1945 to 1965.
Compositions
Gal gained recognition as a composer in the 1920s with his operas, including "Der Arzt der Sobeide" (1918), "Die heilige Ente" (1920), and "Das Lied der Nacht" (1924). His other compositions include four symphonies, concertos for piano, violin, and cello, and chamber music, notably his first string quartet (1916).
Musicology
Following his retirement from teaching, Gal dedicated himself to musicology. He authored several books, including studies on Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner, Giuseppe Verdi, and Franz Schubert.
