Otto von Kleist-Retzow
German conservative politician Otto von Kleist-Retzow was a prominent figure in Prussian politics during the 19th century.
Early Career and Political Beliefs
Born into a Junker family, Kleist-Retzow embraced conservative ideals. In 1848, he became a leader of the strictly conservative Junker party and co-founded the "Kreuzzeitung," a right-wing newspaper.
Member of the Prussian Parliament
From 1849 to 1852, Kleist-Retzow served in the Prussian Chamber of Deputies as part of the reactionary party. In 1851, he was appointed Oberpräsident (Governor) of the Rhine Province, where he presided over a period of police excesses.
Removal from Office and Return to Politics
With the establishment of a regency in Prussia in 1858, Kleist-Retzow was immediately dismissed from his position as Oberpräsident. However, he retained a seat in the Prussian House of Lords and became the leader of the "Stahl faction," a conservative group.
Member of the Reichstag
In 1877, Kleist-Retzow was elected to the newly formed German Reichstag, where he led the far-right faction of the German Conservative Party. He remained a staunch advocate for conservative principles throughout his tenure in the Reichstag.
