A German officer, he served as a liaison officer with the Turkish army during World War I.

Gallantry at Gallipoli

Despite his liaison role, he directly commanded Turkish troops on the battlefield at Gallipoli, including the Turkish 9th Division, part of the Fifth Army under Otto Liman von Sanders.

Literary Contributions

In 1927, he published a book on the Battle of Gallipoli, titled "Gallipoli: Significance and Course of the Battles in 1915" (German: "Gallipoli, Bedeutung und Verlauf der Kampfe 1915"), with a foreword by Liman von Sanders. An English translation was released the following year, and a Turkish translation ("Çanakkale Savaşı Hatıraları") was published in 2009.
