Hans Krahe: German Linguist and Illyrian Expert

Early Career and Würzburg Professorship

Hans Krahe emerged as a notable German linguist specializing in Illyrian languages. From 1936 to 1946, he held a professorship at the University of Würzburg, where he founded the journal "Archiv für die Gewässernamen Deutschlands" in 1942.

Heidelberg and Tübingen Years

Krahe's career continued at Heidelberg University from 1947 to 1949. In 1949, he accepted the position of Professor of Comparative Linguistics and Slavic Studies at the University of Tübingen. Additionally, he became the head of seminars in Indology and Slavic Studies.

Onomastics and Hydronymy

Krahe made significant contributions to the field of onomastics, particularly in his 1949 essay " Ortsnamen als Geschichtsquelle" ("Toponyms as a Historical Source"). In this work, he emphasized the value of hydronymy as a source of historical data. He provided a thorough analysis of the hydronomy of the Main River as an example.

Influence and Legacy

Krahe's assertion that linguistic data correspond to ethnic identity has been critically examined by subsequent scholars, including Walter Pohl and others. Nevertheless, his work remains influential in the study of Illyrian languages and toponymy.
