Hans Krebs: A Distinguished German General
Early Life and Military CareerHans Krebs was born on March 4, 1898, in Helmstedt, Germany. At the age of 16, he volunteered to fight on the Western Front during World War I. After the war, Krebs continued his military career in the Reichswehr. In 1930, as a captain, he was transferred to the War Ministry in Berlin.
Experience in Russia
In the 1930s, Krebs served as an assistant to the German military attaché in the USSR and resided in Moscow. He became fluent in Russian and personally knew many high-ranking Soviet military officers, including Georgy Zhukov. In 1939, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and soon became chief of staff of the VII Army Corps.
Rise Through the Ranks
Krebs's career progressed rapidly during World War II. He was promoted to colonel in 1940, major general in March 1942, lieutenant general in April 1943, and infantry general in August 1944. On March 29, 1945, Krebs succeeded Heinz Guderian as Chief of the General Staff of the Army.
Role in the Final Days of Berlin
Krebs's knowledge of Russian played a crucial role in his final dialogue with the Red Army on May 1, 1945. After Hitler's suicide, Krebs, commissioned by Joseph Goebbels, attempted to negotiate a ceasefire with the Soviet forces storming Berlin. However, a ceasefire was denied, and Krebs was forced to commit suicide.
Suicide
On May 1, 1945, between 9:30 and 10:00 PM, Krebs and General Wilhelm Burgdorf ended their lives. They shot themselves with their service pistols in the corridor of the common dining room in Hitler's bunker, each firing a single bullet to their hearts.
