Hans Kundt: A Military Commander in Bolivia and Germany
Early Life and CareerHans Kundt was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, in 1869. He graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff in 1899, where he studied military disciplines and Russian. After completing his education, Kundt served in the German General Staff and Ministry of Defense.
Service in Bolivia
In 1911, Kundt first traveled to Bolivia as a military adviser. He quickly gained recognition for his punctuality and strict discipline. His famous quote remains, "He who arrives early is a poor soldier, he who arrives late is no soldier at all; only he who arrives on time is a soldier."
World War I and Return to Bolivia
During World War I, Kundt served on the Polish and Galician fronts, commanding a regiment and brigade under General Mackensen. After the war, Kundt returned to Bolivia in 1920, now holding the rank of major general.
Commander-in-Chief of the Bolivian Army
Upon the outbreak of the Chaco War with Paraguay in 1932, Kundt was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Bolivian Army by President D. Salamanca. Kundt was confident in victory and the superiority of the 120 German officers serving in the Bolivian Army.
Failed Tactics and Resignation
Kundt sought to implement a new attack method used on the Eastern Front during World War I. However, his tactics failed against the defenses established by Russian officers for the Paraguayans. In the Battle of Nanawa (1933), Kundt sacrificed a significant portion of his army, resulting in heavy Bolivian losses. Despite the use of tanks, the Bolivians were thwarted by Paraguayan guerilla attacks.
In November 1933, Kundt resigned as Commander-in-Chief. His resignation was due to both military setbacks and the weakening position of his patron, President Salamanca.
Death and Legacy
General Hans Kundt died in Lugano, Switzerland, in 1939, just a day before the outbreak of World War II. He left behind a legacy of military service in both Germany and Bolivia.
