Early Life and Education
Born in Vienna to Sophie Hecker and Salomon Brainin, Paul Brainin was the eldest of four children. As a Jewish youth, Brainin witnessed the rise of Nazism firsthand.
Flight from Austria
In 1938, at the age of 14, Brainin and his cousin Norbert fled their homeland in the wake of the Anschluss. Accompanied by their younger siblings and two apprehensive women, they escaped to Great Britain.
Wartime Experiences
Brainin was too young to be interned upon arriving in England. Instead, he was mobilized as a factory worker in the war industry. During this time, he forged a close friendship with fellow poet Erich Fried.
Literary and Political Activism
Like Fried, Brainin believed poetry and political engagement were inextricably linked. His lyrics exhibited a defiant stance against authority and obscurantism. He deftly blended political themes with British humor, infusing his German-language poetry with English, French, and Italian elements.
Post-War Career
After returning to Vienna in 1946, Brainin worked as a journalist for Austria Presse Agentur and as a correspondent for The New York Times. He also served as head of the press center at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg. Later, he became a freelance publicist.
Personal Life
Paul Brainin's son, Michael Brainin, became a renowned Austrian neurologist.
