Early Life and CareerBorn in Manchester, England, Harry Edwin Wood's initial steps into the realm of astronomy led him to the Transvaal Meteorological Observatory in 1906, where he held the post of Chief Assistant. The observatory's acquisition of telescopes subsequently transformed it into the Union Observatory.
Directing the Union Observatory
From 1928 to 1941, Wood assumed the directorship of the observatory, succeeding Robert Innes. His tenure was marked by his rigorous scientific inquiries, aided by his extensive knowledge of astronomy.
Personal Life
Although he entered into marriage, Wood did not have any children. Beyond his professional endeavors, he actively contributed to the astronomical community, serving as the President of the Astronomical Society of South Africa from 1929 to 1930.
Discoveries and Legacy
Wood's contributions to astronomy include the discovery of 12 asteroids. His dedication to observational astronomy is further recognized by the naming of Asteroid 1660 Wood, discovered in 1953, in his honor.
