Harry Gregg: Legendary Goalkeeper and Football Coach

Harry Gregg was a renowned Northern Irish footballer who played as a goalkeeper for several clubs, most notably Manchester United.

Early Career and Transfer to Manchester United

Gregg began his career with Windsor Park Swifts and later joined Coleraine. At the age of 18, he moved across the Irish Sea to Doncaster Rovers, where he spent five years. In December 1957, Gregg made a record-breaking transfer to Manchester United, becoming the world's most expensive goalkeeper.

World Cup Heroics and Manchester United Success

At the 1958 World Cup, Gregg was named the world's best goalkeeper, receiving 478 votes in a poll ahead of Soviet Union's Lev Yashin. He played 48 clean sheets for United and earned the nickname "Hero of Munich" for his heroic actions in the aftermath of the Munich air disaster.

Post-Manchester United Career

Despite being part of one of United's most successful teams, Gregg failed to win any major trophies due to injuries. He became manager of Shrewsbury Town, Swansea City, Crewe Alexandra, and Swindon Town, assisting in the latter's Fourth Division triumph in 1986.

Legacy and Honors

Gregg is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in Manchester United's history. He received the MBE in 1995 and was inducted as an honorary graduate of Ulster University in 2008. Gregg participated in several documentaries about the Munich disaster and the legacy of Manchester United. He passed away in 2020, leaving a lasting impact on the world of football.
