Giancarlo Antognoni began his football journey at the tender age of 16 with Astimacobi in the Italian Serie D. His talent caught the attention of legendary Swedish coach Nils Liedholm, who brought him to Fiorentina in 1972.

Antognoni's debut in Serie A came in October 1972 with Fiorentina. He went on to become a mainstay and a symbol of the club, captaining the team for an impressive 11 years from 1976 to 1987. During his tenure, he led Fiorentina to victory in the Italian Cup in the 1974/75 season.
International Success
Antognoni's exceptional performances earned him a call-up to the Italian national team in 1974. He represented his country in 73 matches, scoring 7 goals, and reached the pinnacle of glory by winning the FIFA World Cup in 1982.
Club Record and Retirement
With 341 appearances in Serie A for Fiorentina, Antognoni became the club's all-time record holder for matches played. After a long and illustrious career, he bid farewell to Fiorentina in 1987. He then joined FC Lausanne-Sport in Switzerland, where he played for two seasons before retiring in 1989.
