Biography of Harry Hay
Early LifeHarry Hay was born in 1912 in the small English town of Worthing, Sussex. In 1919, he immigrated to California with his parents. After finishing school, he enrolled in Stanford University. However, after a few courses, Hay decided to drop out and moved to San Francisco to pursue a career in acting. His acting career did not flourish, and in the 1930s, he became a member of the Communist Party.
Advocacy for LGBTQ+ Rights
During his time as a member of the Communist Party, Harry Hay realized that his main life goal was to advocate for the rights of gay and lesbian individuals. The Communist Party became a platform for him to express his opinions. In 1934, Hay was in a close relationship with actor Will Geer, and their relationship was often scrutinized by Hollywood newspapers.
In the 1930s, terms like "gay" and "lesbian" did not exist. Hay decided to unite all people with non-heterosexual orientations into a collective group and together fight for their rights. He made bold statements, urging gay individuals to stop hiding their relationships. He fought against their oppression in society and engaged in conversations with ordinary people, explaining that homosexuals were no different from them, but rather citizens with equal rights and responsibilities.
Founding LGBTQ+ Communities
In the early 1950s, Harry Hay, along with like-minded individuals, organized the first gay community called "Mattachine Society." This society aimed to advocate for the rights of gays and provide support to its members.
In the 1970s, Hay made significant strides in politics. In 1979, he became the leader of the organization "Radical Faeries," which not only fought for social rights for gays but also highlighted the vibrant and romantic inner world of the LGBTQ+ community.
Personal Life and Legacy
Throughout his life, Harry Hay found unwavering support and love from his longtime friend and partner, John Burnside. Together, they faced numerous challenges, endured countless accusations and insults, but nothing could break their warm and affectionate bond. In his final years, Hay surrounded himself with close and understanding people, living a happy and peaceful life filled with love and beauty.
Harry Hay passed away on October 24, 2002. Until his last days, he remained one of the key fighters for the rights of sexual minorities. He will forever be remembered as a "legend of the gay rights movement."
