Early Life and Education
Joanna Duda-Gwiazda was born in Poland and graduated from the Shipbuilding Faculty of the Gdańsk University of Technology, where she specialized in shipbuilding engineering.
Anti-Communist Activism
Influenced by her husband, Andrzej Gwiazda, Duda-Gwiazda became involved in the anti-communist movement in the 1960s. She joined the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) in 1962 but left in 1968 due to the party's repressive policies.
"Solidarity" Activist
Duda-Gwiazda played a pivotal role in the "Solidarity" movement that emerged in Poland in the 1970s. She joined the Free Trade Unions of the Coast (WZZ) and became an editor of the underground newsletter Robotnik Wybrzeża. In 1980, she participated in the Gdańsk Shipyard strike and was a co-author of the 21 demands that formed the basis of the August Accords. She later served as the press secretary for "Solidarity."
Internment and Resistance
Following the military crackdown on "Solidarity" in 1981, Duda-Gwiazda was interned and held for several months. Upon her release, she continued to resist the communist regime by publishing underground journals and criticizing the "Magdalenka Agreement" and the Round Table Talks.
Post-Communism
After the fall of communism in Poland, Duda-Gwiazda remained an active voice for democracy and human rights. She participated in protests against the government's policies and became a respected expert on the history of "Solidarity."
Literary Career
In addition to her political activism, Duda-Gwiazda is an accomplished writer and essayist. She has published several books, including "Polska wyprawa na Księżyc" and "Poza Układem."
Recognition and Honors
Duda-Gwiazda has been awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta and is an honorary citizen of Gdańsk. She is recognized for her unwavering commitment to democracy, freedom, and social justice.
