With over 6,000 items, Sperl's collection includes everything from a hamburger-shaped motorcycle to a hamburger-themed water bed and even a hamburger delivery car.
From Curiosity to Obsession
Sperl's fascination with hamburgers began in 1987 while staging a photoshoot for a novelty company. After purchasing toy hamburgers for the shoot, he realized the potential for a unique collection. "One of my friends stopped by, saw the hamburgers, and said, 'Are you crazy? You're collecting hamburgers?' I said, 'No, but maybe I will.'"
The Holy Grail
The crown jewel of Sperl's collection is his customized 1987 Harley Davidson Sportster motorcycle. Transformed into a three-wheeled behemoth, the "Giant Cheeseburger" features a fiberglass shell and a customized paint job meticulously executed by Sperl's "hamburger helpers." It took two years and approximately $100,000 to complete the motorcycle, which has been featured on television shows and in a Fruitopia commercial.
Hamburger Haven
Sperl's 1,000-square-foot home is a veritable sanctuary to all things hamburger. From Big Boy statues to McDonald's playsets, hamburger-shaped lamps to hamburger cookie jars, Sperl has adorned every nook and cranny with his collection. He also owns the iconic blue AMC Pacer delivery car from the 1997 film "Good Burger."
A Patriotic Symbol
For Sperl, hamburgers represent an embodiment of American culture: "This is the American icon," he asserts. "When you think of Germany, you think of beer and the autobahn. When you think of the United States of America, you think of hamburgers."
A Shared Experience
While Sperl once indulged frequently in his culinary obsession, health concerns have forced him to limit his hamburger intake. Despite this, he still savors the occasional treat from local favorites such as Charlie Horse Restaurant and Brickyard. Sperl delights in sharing his collection with others, particularly children whose faces light up at the sight of his Giant Cheeseburger. His goal is to evoke joy and inspire admiration, and he hopes to pass on his legacy to a museum or exhibition that can showcase the marvels of his hamburger wonderland.
