Harvey Johannes Keitel was born on May 13, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He was born into a Jewish family, with his father Harry Keitel being a successful businessman and his mother Miriam Keitel, nee Klein, being an immigrant from Romania.

Keitel spent his childhood in the Brighton Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn and attended Abraham Lincoln High School. At the age of sixteen, he joined the United States Marine Corps and was sent to Lebanon as part of the military operation called "Operation Blue Bat". After returning home, Keitel worked as a court reporter before enrolling at New York University and studying acting at the Herbert Berghof Studio and the Actors Studio on Manhattan.

Keitel's first major role in film came in 1967 when he starred in Martin Scorsese's debut feature film "Who's That Knocking at My Door?".
