Hassan Gouled Aptidon: The Founding Father of Djibouti
Hassan Gouled Aptidon was born in what is now Somalia. He belonged to the Issa ethnic group and became a prominent advocate for Djibouti's independence from France and its resistance to join Somalia.
Early Career and Political Ascent
After the 1958 elections, where the Republican Union party supporting unification with Somalia was defeated, Aptidon became Vice-President of the Government Council. In April 1959, he was elected to represent Djibouti in the French National Assembly. From 1963 to 1967, he served as Minister of Education.
Djibouti's First President
In May 1977, Aptidon became Prime Minister of Djibouti, which had gained independence on June 27. He simultaneously held the presidency until July. In 1981, he established a one-party state under the ruling People's Rally for Progress (RPP). Aptidon was re-elected as the sole candidate in subsequent presidential elections.
Economic Growth and Challenges
Despite political authoritarianism, Djibouti's economy experienced significant growth under Aptidon's leadership. However, the 1990s saw a sharp economic decline.
Political Reforms and Succession
In 1992, Aptidon held a referendum that approved a multi-party system with a maximum of four political forces. Despite this, the RPP won all seats in parliament, and Aptidon was re-elected for a six-year term in 1993.
Faced with economic challenges, Aptidon designated his nephew, Ismail Omar Guelleh, as his successor. Guelleh was elected in 1999.
Legacy and Influence
Hassan Gouled Aptidon remained an influential political figure and a key advisor to his nephew. He passed away in 2006, leaving behind a legacy as the founding father of Djibouti.
