Sultan of Brunei
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the 29th ruler of the Bruneian dynasty, reigns since 1967. The dynasty has been ruling the kingdom since the 14th century.
Education and Military Career
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah received his education at Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. In 1964, he became the Crown Prince. Three years later, in 1967, he graduated from the Royal Military Academy with the rank of Captain.
Reign and Titles
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah was proclaimed Sultan on October 5, 1967, and was crowned on August 1, 1968. Since 1984, he has served as Prime Minister, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Defense.
He holds numerous honorary military ranks, including Field Marshal (Brunei, 1967), General of the Bruneian Air Force (Brunei, 1967), Admiral (Brunei, 1967), General (United Kingdom, 1984), Chief Marshal of the Royal Air Force (United Kingdom, 1992), and Admiral (United Kingdom, 2001).
