Hatton, Duke of Aquitaine
Early Life and SuccessionHatton was the son of Eudo the Great, Duke of Aquitaine. In 735, he inherited the dukedoms of Aquitaine and Vasconia alongside his brother Hunald. Hatton's capital was Poitiers, earning him the title Count of Poitiers.
Conflict with the Franks
In response to the death of Eudo, the Frankish mayor of the palace, Charles Martel, invaded Aquitaine. After capturing the castle of Blaye and the city of Bordeaux, Martel subdued the region by 736. Hunald and Hatton resisted, but Hatton was taken prisoner. Martel recognized Hunald's authority over Aquitaine, but only after Hunald pledged allegiance to the Franks. Hatton was released and Charles Martel returned to his territories.
Conflict with Hunald
Around 744, Hatton quarreled with his brother and co-ruler, Hunald, after remaining loyal to the Carolingians. As a result, Hatton was blinded, leaving Hunald as the sole ruler of Aquitaine and Vasconia.
Personal Life
The Charter of Alaon attributes Hatton with a wife named Vandrada and three sons. However, their parentage is not supported by other sources, and the Charter of Alaon is considered a later forgery by many historians.
