Hazel Abel: A Trailblazing Political and Business Leader
Hazel Hempel Abel was an American politician and entrepreneur who served as a United States Senator from Nebraska from November 8 to December 31, 1954.
Early Life and Education
Born in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, to Charles and Ella Hempel, Hazel Abel attended Omaha schools and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1908. She worked as a mathematics teacher and later as a school principal before joining her husband George Abel's construction company.
Business Career
Within her husband's company, Abel served as secretary, treasurer, and eventually became its president. She demonstrated her business acumen and leadership skills, contributing significantly to the company's success.
Political Involvement
Abel's political involvement began as a delegate to Republican state conventions from 1938 to 1948 and from 1952 to 1956. In 1954, she was elected vice-chairwoman of the Republican State Central Committee.
Appointed Senator
Following the death of Senator Hugh Butler, Abel was appointed to fill the vacancy by Governor Robert Crosby. She thus became the first woman to serve in the United States Senate from Nebraska.
