Biography of Paul Ryan
Paul Davis Ryan Jr. was born on January 29, 1970, in Janesville, Wisconsin. He is an American politician and a member of the Republican Party. Ryan has served in the United States House of Representatives from Wisconsin since 1999.
Early Life and Education
Paul Ryan is the youngest of four children born to Elizabeth Hutter and lawyer Paul Murray Ryan. His great-grandfather founded the company now known as 'Ryan Incorporated Central,' specializing in earthwork. Ryan's grandfather was appointed by Calvin Coolidge as the prosecutor of the Western District of Wisconsin.
Ryan attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Janesville, where he played on the school basketball team. He later attended Joseph A. Craig High School, where he was crowned prom king. Ryan participated in skiing, track and field, football, and basketball. He was a member of several academic and social clubs, including the Model United Nations. Ryan and his family frequently enjoyed hiking and skiing trips to the Rocky Mountains.
When Ryan was 16 years old, he discovered his father dead in bed from a heart attack. After his father's death, Ryan spent much of his time caring for his grandmother, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease. He chose not to spend his social security survivor benefits until he turned 18, saving them for future education expenses.
In 1992, Ryan graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, specializing in economics and political science.
Political Career
Ryan was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1998, defeating the 29-year-old pianist Michael J. Logan in the primary election and Democrat Lydia Spottswood in the general election. This made Ryan the second-youngest member of the House. He has been re-elected seven times, always receiving over 55% of the votes.
In 2011, Ryan became the Chairman of the House Budget Committee. He was also selected as the Republican Party's nominee for Vice President of the United States in the 2012 election. However, he and presidential candidate Mitt Romney lost to Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Despite the loss, Ryan was re-elected to Congress.
Personal Life
In 2000, Ryan married Janna Little, a tax attorney. They have three children: Liza, Charles, and Sam. Due to a family history of heart attacks occurring before the age of 60, including his father, Ryan is committed to a fitness program called P90X. He also takes his diet seriously and even makes his own German sausages and Polish kielbasa.
