Biography of He Lun

He Lun was a Chinese military figure and Marshal of the People's Liberation Army. He gained prominence during the Chinese Revolution from 1925 to 1927, where he commanded the 15th Separate Division and later the 20th Corps of the National Revolutionary Army. He became well-known for his role in the Henan Operation against the Fengtian forces in May 1927.

Early Life and Military Career

He Lun was born in Hunan Province, China, into a family belonging to the Tujia ethnic group. During the Chinese Revolution from 1925 to 1927, he first commanded the 15th Separate Division and later the 20th Corps of the National Revolutionary Army. He gained fame for his leadership in the Henan Operation against the Fengtian forces in May 1927.

In August 1927, during the split between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China (CPC), He Lun was one of the leaders of the Nanchang Uprising and joined the CPC. In December 1927, upon the instruction of the CPC Central Committee, he was sent to the western regions of Hunan and Hubei provinces as part of a group of CPC military workers to establish Red Army units.

He Lun served as the commander of the 3rd Corps of the Chinese Red Army in Hubei Province and later as the commander of the 2nd Front of the Red Army. In 1935-1936, under pressure from the Kuomintang forces, He Lun's troops conducted the Long March from the Soviet region in Hunan to Guiyang and Sichuan, finally arriving in Yan'an with only 4,000 soldiers remaining out of the original 20,000.

Later Career and Death

After the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, He Lun was appointed as the commander of the 120th Infantry Division of the 8th Army in August 1937. Following the end of World War II, he commanded troops during the Chinese Civil War from 1947 to 1949. After the Communist Party's victory, he held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Government and also led the Chinese Sports Committee.

In 1955, He Lun was awarded the title of Marshal. From 1956, he became a member of the Communist Party's Politburo. However, in 1966, he was removed from all positions and expelled from the party for "anti-party activities" during the Cultural Revolution. He Lun passed away in 1969 while in confinement, thus becoming one of the victims of the Cultural Revolution.
