Early Life and Military Education

Ivan Pavlovich Kalmykov was born in the village of Groznenskaya in the Terek region on the North Caucasus. His father was a merchant from Kharkov, and his mother was a local Terek Cossack. Kalmykov attended the Alexandrovskaya Missionary Theological Seminary in Ardon, where he completed four years of education.

Military Service

In 1909, Kalmykov joined the Tiflis Military Cadet School as a private-rank cadet. He rose through the ranks quickly, becoming a non-commissioned officer in 1910. Two years later, he graduated from the school and was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant into the 3rd Siberian Sapper Battalion.

In October 1913, Kalmykov requested a transfer to the Ussuri Cossack Division, claiming that he was a hereditary Cossack. His request was granted, and he joined the Ussuri Cossack Regiment as a cornet in January 1914.

World War I

During World War I, Kalmykov served as a company commander in the Ussuri Cossack Regiment. He was promoted to captain in 1915 and to lieutenant colonel in 1917. He distinguished himself in combat and was awarded several decorations, including the Order of St. Vladimir, 4th class with swords and bow, and the George Cross for bravery in action.

Russian Civil War

After the October Revolution, Kalmykov returned to the Primorye region and played a prominent role in the anti-Bolshevik resistance. He was appointed temporary military ataman of the Ussuri Cossack Host in October 1917 and elected ataman in January 1918.

Kalmykov led the Ussuri Cossacks in several battles against the Bolsheviks, capturing Khabarovsk in September 1918 and becoming head of the city's garrison. He was promoted to major general in October 1918 and commanded the Ussuri Cossack Brigade, later reorganized into a division and a detachment.

Accusations and Controversies

Kalmykov's tactics and brutality during the Civil War drew criticism from both his opponents and some of his own subordinates. He was accused of summary executions, robbery, and violence against civilians. These accusations damaged his reputation and undermined his authority.

Defeat and Death

In February 1920, facing an advance by the Red partisans, Kalmykov retreated with his remaining forces to China. Shortly after, he was arrested by Chinese military authorities and charged with embezzlement, murder, and attacking Chinese warships.

On September 13, 1920, Kalmykov attempted to escape from his prison camp but was shot and killed by his guards. He was buried in a mass grave near the city of Ilan in China.

Legacy

Ivan Pavlovich Kalmykov was a controversial figure who played a complex role in the Russian Civil War. His military successes and brutality left a lasting mark on the conflict and continue to be debated by historians today.
