A Tragic Case: Xi Zeli, a Chained Boy in China

Childhood Trauma and Family Neglect

At a tender age of one, Xi Zeli suffered a head injury that sparked his mental health struggles. Without access to proper psychiatric care, his relatives resorted to unconventional and cruel measures.

A Life in Chains

Under the supervision of his disabled grandfather and mentally unstable father, Xi Zeli has been living in a harrowing existence for an unknown period of time. He is held captive in his backyard, tethered to a metal chain. Whether chained to a wall or a column, Xi Zeli's only respite comes during supervised walks, where the chain remains attached.

Family's Claims of Danger

Xi Zeli's family justifies their actions by claiming his mental instability poses a danger to himself and others. They allege he has engaged in violent outbursts. The veracity of these claims remains uncertain, but even if true, their chosen method of containment is barbaric.

Lack of Healthcare Access

While the family bears responsibility for their mistreatment of Xi Zeli, they are not solely at fault. China's mental healthcare system is severely lacking. Despite an estimated 160 million individuals suffering from mental disorders, the country only has 1.5 psychiatrists and 2.2 nurses per 100,000 people.

A National Crisis

Mental health problems have become a pressing issue in China. Statistics from 2009 indicate that nearly every 13th Chinese citizen experiences some form of mental instability. This sharp increase from 2.7% in the 1950s is alarming.

A Grim Future for Xi Zeli

Without access to適切な治療, Xi Zeli's prospects for a better life are bleak. Despite the potential for improvement in China's healthcare system, it is unlikely to come soon enough for this young boy.
