Biography of Heather Moyse

Heather Moyse, a Canadian bobsledder and rugby player, was born on July 23, 1978, in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada. She represents her country at the international level in bobsleigh and rugby, and also competes at the university level in rugby, football, and track and field.

Bobsleigh Career

In the 2005-2006 season, Moyse competed in bobsleigh and, along with her partner Helen Upperton, won the Canadian championship and earned four medals in the World Cup, including a gold medal in St. Moritz, Switzerland. After a break, Moyse returned to the World Cup in the 2007-2008 season and won silver, bronze, and two fifth-place finishes with her previous partner. At the 2008 World Championships in Altenberg, Germany, she and Lisa Szabon finished in 11th place. In the 2008-2009 World Cup season, Moyse made a comeback after a serious shoulder injury sustained during a rugby match in Canada. With Upperton, she won gold in Igls, Austria, finished fifth in St. Moritz, won a silver medal in Whistler, and placed fifth at the 2009 World Championships in Lake Placid. In the 2009-2010 World Cup season, Moyse and Kaillie Humphries finished second overall, earning four medals, including a gold in Altenberg, Germany. Continuing to excel in bobsleigh, Moyse and Humphries won a gold medal in the two-man event at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Rugby Career

In addition to bobsleigh, Moyse achieved success in rugby. At the 2008 Rugby 7s Tournament in Hong Kong, she was named the top try-scorer among women with 11 tries in just four matches. At the 2006 Women's Rugby World Cup in Edmonton, Alberta, where Canada finished in fourth place, Moyse once again stood out, scoring 35 points and 7 tries in five matches.

University Achievements

At the University of Waterloo, where Moyse earned a bachelor's degree in kinesiology, she was named "Rookie of the Year." At the University of Toronto, she earned a master's degree in occupational therapy and led the "Varsity Blues" team to the national CIS final in 2004 and played in the All-Star tournament. In 2002, Moyse was inducted into the University of Waterloo's Sports Hall of Fame. She received the "Lieutenant-Governor's Award" as the outstanding athlete of Prince Edward Island in 2006 and was named the province's athlete of the year in 2005 and 2006. Throughout her career, Moyse earned seven sports awards, starting from 1998.
