Early Life and Education
Heather Wilson's journey began on March 16, 1960. She attended the United States Air Force Academy and graduated in 1982. Her academic pursuits continued at Oxford University, where she earned a doctorate in International Law and the Use of Force by National Liberation Movements. This esteemed work was recognized with the Paul Reuter Prize in 1988.
Government Service
In 1989, Wilson joined the National Security Council as Director of the Office of Defense Policy and Arms Control for Europe. Her impressive tenure lasted until 1991, when she left government service to establish Keystone International, a company dedicated to fostering business partnerships between the United States and Russia.
Congressional Career
In 1998, Wilson embarked on her political career. She was elected to the United States House of Representatives for New Mexico's 1st Congressional District. Her constituents re-elected her in 2000, 2004, and 2006. However, in 2008, Wilson opted not to seek a fifth term and instead sought to represent New Mexico in the United States Senate. Although she lost the Republican primary, her political ambitions remained strong.
Cabinet Appointment
On January 23, 2017, President Donald Trump nominated Wilson for the position of Secretary of the Air Force. The United States Senate confirmed her appointment on May 8, with a vote of 76 to 22. Wilson was sworn into office on May 16, 2017.
Later Career
In March 2019, Wilson announced her decision to leave her Cabinet role on May 31, 2019. Her subsequent move was to become President of the University of Texas at El Paso, a testament to her commitment to education and service.
