Hector Hernandez's Unforgettable "Beer Belly"
In the bustling city of Downey, California, a 47-year-old man named Hector Hernandez became the subject of curious glances. His protruding abdomen, mistakenly assumed to be a "beer belly," concealed a shocking truth. Unbeknownst to him, it was a colossal 35-kilogram malignant tumor.
The Weight that Wouldn't Budge
Despite adhering to a veggie-rich diet, regular exercise, and abstaining from alcohol, Hector's weight continued to increase. "I thought I was just getting fat," he recalled. A doctor initially shared this belief.
A Glimmer of Hope
Fortunately, Hector sought a second opinion. In 2017, he consulted Dr. William Tseng, a surgical oncologist at the University of Southern California. To his astonishment, Hector was diagnosed with retroperitoneal liposarcoma, a cancerous tumor that originates in areas of fat accumulation.
A Life-Changing Procedure
In July 2018, a team of surgeons led by Dr. Tseng embarked on a 10-hour operation to remove the immense 35-kilogram mass. "An immature fat cell tumor," described Tseng.
A New Lease on Life
"I got so much satisfaction when I saw the before and after pictures of Hector. He looked as slim as he did four to five years ago," exclaimed Dr. Tseng. "To safely remove his tumor and give him the joy of a full life again, it's so rewarding."
Hector wholeheartedly agreed, feeling almost like his old self now that the cancerous burden had been lifted. "God, it feels great," he told The Times.
Support from Loved Ones
To assist with mounting medical expenses, Hector's friends and family launched a GoFundMe campaign. By December 5, 2018, they had raised $3,974 of their $10,000 goal.
