The Oldest Woman on Earth: Mariam Amash

Mariam Amash, born in 1888 in what is now modern-day Israel during the Ottoman Empire, is believed to be the oldest living woman in the world. The revelation came when the elderly woman, accompanied by her great-granddaughter, calmly visited the local passport office to renew her identification, which had become tattered over time. However, some officials were skeptical of the claim that she is 120 years old.

According to the Israeli Ministry of Interior official Moshe Hazut, the accuracy of population registration during that time period was not entirely reliable. Therefore, it is possible that Mariam Amash may be slightly younger or even older than she asserts. Nevertheless, Mariam Amash insists that she is indeed the oldest woman in the world, exhibiting her independence as she eats, drinks, and showers on her own. Furthermore, she confidently expresses her hope to live for at least another ten years in an interview with the BBC.

A Life of Tradition and Family

Mariam Amash has spent her entire life in the Arab village of Jisr az-Zarka, near the city of Hadera in northern Israel. Despite her advanced age, Mariam rises at five in the morning to perform her morning prayers, followed by a short walk. The rest of her day is spent surrounded by her extensive family.

Her family is quite large, consisting of 10 children, 120 grandchildren, 250 great-grandchildren, and 30 great-great-grandchildren. Recently, her most recent great-great-grandchild was born, and she plans to celebrate this milestone. Mariam's diet consists mainly of vegetables and fruits, with absolutely no alcohol. She feels excellent and maintains good health. Additionally, at the age of 102, she independently embarked on the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, demonstrating her remarkable strength and determination.

Words of Wisdom and Longevity

For those who envy her longevity, Mariam Amash advises against excessive alcohol consumption. It is worth noting that the official record for the oldest person on the planet, according to the Guinness World Records, is currently held by Edna Parker, a 114-year-old resident of the state of Indiana in the United States.
